Overview of

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

in Thailand

Plasma is the liquid part of your blood that’s mostly made of water and protein. It lets red and white blood cells and platelets move through your bloodstream. Platelets are a type of blood cell that makes your blood clot. They also play a role in healing. PRP is generally regarded as a promising, non-surgical treatment for easing joint pain and reducing inflammation by promoting the natural healing of osteoarthritis, tendons, ligaments and other soft tissue injuries. The procedure involves using injections of a concentration of a patient’s own platelets to accelerate the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints. In this way, PRP injections use each individual patient's own healing system to improve musculoskeletal problems. PRP injections are prepared by taking anywhere from one to a few tubes of your own blood and running it through a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. These activated platelets are then injected directly into your injured or diseased body tissue. This releases growth factors that stimulate and increase the number of reparative cells your body produces.

Pros and cons of

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Pros

-Platelet-rich plasma has been found to significantly enhance the healing process, and using a PRP injection for shoulder pain caused by rotator cuff tears, for Achilles tendon ruptures and for other soft-tissue injuries is becoming more common.

-PRP has also been demonstrated to improve function and reduce pain in people who have tendonitis or chronic tendinosis conditions such as tennis elbow or golfer's elbow.

-They can reduce the need for anti-inflammatories or stronger medications like opioids.

-Side effects of PRP injections are very limited because, since the injections are created from your own blood, your body will not reject or react negatively to them.

Cons

-PRP injections cannot be used alongside anesthetics because the acidity and alkalinity present can negatively impact PRP efficiency.  Thus, patients should be prepared to endure the pain or discomfort resulting from receiving PRP injections.

-Patients must refrain from taking any anti-inflammatory or steroid-based drugs for two or more weeks prior to PRP injections. These drugs will decrease PRP functioning efficiency.

How it works:

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

The treatment involves taking a small sample from patient’s blood and spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from other components of the blood. These concentrated platelets are then injected directly into an injured area of bone or soft tissue such as a tendon or a ligament to heal and increase growth factors.

Preparation before

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Pre - treatment

You’ll likely need to stop taking certain medications that thin your blood, like aspirin and ibuprofen, before you get PRP injections. You may also need to take a break from certain vitamins or supplements, such as omega-3 fatty acids. Your doctor can tell you exactly what you need to do to prepare for these shots.

Recovery after

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Post - treatment

The patient should avoid washing the treatment area for 48 hours. After that, it is all right to use hair and skin care products and continue with topical medications. The treatment area may be sore for two or three days, and the patient may notice some bruising. Acetaminophen can help ease discomfort. In case of severe pain, the patient should notify the doctor’s office right away. Hair dye or coloring treatments can resume one week after PRP treatment. The effect of treatment is most noticeable after at least six months. Repeat treatments may be necessary to maintain the improvement in hair growth and texture.

Risks & side effects

PRP doesn’t usually cause major side effects. But because it involves drawing blood, you’ll want to make sure you eat before the procedure. That will help you avoid feeling lightheaded when you get PRP injections. You might notice some soreness and bruising in the area that received injections. If you feel sharp or intense pain, let your doctor know.

FAQs:

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

What Can Platelet-Rich Plasma Treat?

PRP injections are used to treat torn tendons, tendinitis, muscle injuries, arthritis-related pain, and joint injuries. They’re becoming more common for cosmetic procedures, too. For example, dermatologists and hair replacement experts use PRP injections to treat a type of hair loss called androgenic alopecia, also known as male or female pattern baldness, which affects men and women. And some dermatologists provide PRP treatments for the face.

How well do Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections Work?

More studies are needed to see what conditions PRP can work on. So far, research shows that it speeds healing after injury or surgery for certain conditions, like torn tendons. In addition to helping injured tissue heal, some studies show PRP injections curb pain and boost mobility for people with rotator cuff injuries. It can take several weeks for PRP injections to start working. For some conditions, particularly those affecting the hair or the skin, it may take up to 6 months to notice the full effects. For some conditions, including hair loss, you may need to repeat the procedure to maintain the results.

When is the procedure not recommended?

You can’t get PRP injections if you have:  -Abnormal platelet function or a low platelet count -Anemia -Cancer -An infection

What is the recovery time for PRP injections?

When PRP is injected following injury, your doctor may recommend that you rest the affected area. However, these recommendations are more related to the injury and less to the PRP injections. Most people can continue their daily activities following PRP injections.  Because PRP injections are intended to promote healing or growth, you may not notice an immediate difference after receiving the injections. However, in several weeks or months, you may observe that the area is healing faster or growing more hair than you would have expected if you hadn’t received PRP injections.

How Quickly does PRP Work?

PRP is intended as a healing modality and not for quick pain relief. Your pain will gradually subside as the injured tissue repairs and pain-relieving growth factors activate. This process can take weeks or months, but when successful, the effect is long-lasting. If relief is not sufficient at three months, a second injection may be performed. Maximum effects are usually seen at six to nine months. Some knee joints may require two injections in closer proximity in time.
