FibroScan is a newly specialized ultrasound based machine to help detact changes in your liver. It measures fibrosis (scarring) and steatosis (fatty change) in your liver. Fatty change is when fat builds up in your liver cells. A FibroScan will help your healthcare provider learn more about your liver disease. It can be used alone or with other tests (such as blood tests, imaging scans, or biopsies) that also measure scarring or fatty change in your liver.
Fibroscan will help tell your doctor about the fatty change and level of fibrosis in your liver. It will help your doctor stage the level of fibrosis that your liver has.

-The Fibroscan is a very safe procedure. Unlike the liver biopsy which involves an invasive approach.
- Preparation for this test is quite simple; there is no need for the patient to abstain from consuming food or liquids. It can be conducted immediately, and can provide insight into the status of the liver within just one session.
-The Fibroscan takes approximately 8-10 minutes and is highly accurate. Results can be obtained immediately after the scan and there are no complications. These tests can be done as many times as required without risk of negative side effects, patients are not required to spend the night at the hospital and may return home right after.
-The Fibroscan is not expensive when compared to the Liver Biopsy.
-The Fibroscan is unable to diagnose tumors or cancer in the liver and may not be used on patients with a BMI of more than 28 kg/m2.
- It is unsuitable for pregnant women and patients with ascites (fluid in the abdominal cavity). -It is also unsuitable for patients with a pacemaker, implants, heart patients, cancer in its latter stages, and certain other medical limitations.
You will be asked to lie on your back with your arms raised over your head. A gel will be applied on to your liver area on the right side. The ultrasound procedure will begin which may last approximately 10 minutes.
Fibroscan is a very straightforward procedure. It is usually performed in the outpatient department, as such no preparation is necessary.
Patients are allowed to return home after their Fibroscan
The fibroscan was invented to overcome the invasive testing that was carried out by liver biopsies. Since Fibroscan is a noninvasive test, it can be performed at the point of care and does not involve sedation and pain.
How long until I can receive my Fibroscan results?
The FibroScan machine provides immediate results to the operator. Your doctor then interprets the result according to your history and underlying disease. He/she will then discuss your results with you
Will I experience any pain or discomfort during the scan?
The exam is painless and non-invasive. During measurement, you feel a slight vibration on the skin at the tip of the probe. It’s also easy and fast, usually taking 5 to 10 minutes.
