Overview of

Embryoscope

in Thailand

EmbryoScope is an advanced form of incubator that provide the same natural conditions for embryos to grow after fertilization and before implantation into the mommy’s womb or freezing.

What is so special about EmbryoScope over other incubators is that it has a built-in camera and microscope. The camera capture images of the development of the embryo at a specific time interval and build a video record.

Meanwhile the microscope opens a window for the doctors to watch the development of the fertilized embryos. The window aids in the selection of embryos for implantation. The incorporated camera allows monitoring of fertilized embryos inside the incubator without the need to transfer for microscopic monitoring.

All these factors increase the odds of pregnancy success.

Goals of

Embryoscope

The main goals of EmbryoScope are monitoring and safety. EmbryoScope provides continuous monitoring through the built-in camera which takes an image every 10 minutes (this is why it is called a time-lapse system). This close follow-up is accomplished while the embryo is inside the incubator with no change in the surrounding environment. It is safer for the embryos and avoids the risk of damage that can sometimes happen if doctors transfer the embryos outside the incubator for closer examination.

Pros and cons of

Embryoscope

Pros

  • provides valuable information about the development of the embryos through the images taken every 10 minutes which helps the doctors to choose the most viable embryo(s).
  • close follow-up on the cell division process to spot signs that may lead to developmental disorders for the embryo
  • the incubator mimics the normal physiological conditions in terms of temperature and pH inside the womb which provide the most favorable conditions for the embryos to develop.
  • the monitoring process occurs inside the incubator which means less disruption for the embryos development.
  • it increases the odds of pregnancy success according to recent clinical studies.
  • the provided images and videos make it simpler to keep the parents in the loop.

Cons

There is no danger or harm to the developing embryos during monitoring using this time-lapse imaging technique. But on the other hand, this close-up monitoring may hold some bad news if the collected data suggest that the embryos are not fit for transfer or implant.

How it works:

Embryoscope

The process starts by collecting the eggs and sperm from your partner/donor. After samples collection, the fertilization process starts in the IVF lab by processing and mixing both the eggs and sperms. Then, they are left in the incubator for the next day to be checked for signs of fertilization. After being fertilized, the egg is now called an embryo.

The incubation and monitoring of the embryos through the next 5-7 days occur through the EmbryoScope. The incubation chamber provides similar physiologic conditions as the womb to allow smooth growth of the embryos; while the integrated camera and microscope capture images every 10 minutes to provide sufficient information to the fertilization team about the development of the embryos.

These data are analyzed through a specific software called Known Implantation Data (KID) Score algorithm to identify the ideal candidate for implantation or freezing. This intensive monitoring occurs while the embryos remain safely in the incubator.

Preparation before

Embryoscope

Pre - treatment

For the embryo to form, an ovum or egg from the female must be fertilized by sperm from the male.

First of all, the female ovaries must be triggered to release eggs through an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle. The specialized fertility team then starts with egg collection through a simple procedure that lasts only for 15-20 minutes, during which you will be sedated to avoid any discomfort. The sperms of your partner or donor are collected in the lab.

Once both samples are collected, the fertility expert will start embryo fertilization, incubation, and close monitoring through the technology provided by the EmbryoScope to select the most suitable embryos.

Recovery after

Embryoscope

Post - treatment

After eggs collection, you just have to sit back, relax, and cross your fingers waiting for the 5-7 days of incubation to end. Then, you will meet with your doctor to get the results of the EmbryoScope and hopefully get the good news of having successful healthy fertilized embryo(s).

The successfully fertilized embryos will then be implanted into your uterus. At this point, you have to closely follow your doctor’s instructions which may include getting well-rested, avoiding heavy lifting, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, strict adherence to healthy food choices, and regularly taking the prescribed medications such as progesterone, folic acid, and aspirin as per your doctor’s recommendations.

Risks & side effects

There is no harm to embryos from the close follow-up and monitoring provided by the integrated camera and captured images in the EmbryoScope system as it adheres to the safety terms of embryo fertilization and incubation.

However, the ugly face of having such a huge amount of information and close follow-up is that it may hold disappointing news for you that none of the fertilized embryos is suitable for implantation or freezing and, in this case, your doctor may present other treatment options.

Although this can be bad news, this valuable information wouldn’t normally be available through other conventional methods, so you can plan your next steps quickly by consulting with the doctor.

FAQs:

Embryoscope

What kind of patients is this procedure ideal for?

EmbryoScope technology with time-lapse monitoring is suitable for all cases aiming for in vitro fertilization. But it can add more weight in cases with a history of previous IVF failure, repeated abortion, and in the case of mothers above 35 years old.

When does clinic collect my eggs for EmbyroScope?

The timing for egg placement in the Embryoscope differs according to the fertilization technique.

If the sperm is directly injected into the egg this is called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), following the injection the egg is transferred into the Embryoscope to monitor the fertilization that we are sure of its occurrence.

While in the case of IVF, the egg and the sperm are mixed and we allow the sperm to fertilize the egg by itself. The fertilization is checked if it occurred or not inside the EmbryoScope on the next day to give time to clear the tissue around the embryo for a better vision of the integrated camera.
