Overview of

Arm Lift Surgery

in Thailand

Arm lifts are a form of cosmetic surgery designed to treat droopy and saggy arms to give tighter, firmer skin. Loose skin on the arms is caused by several factors, such as weight loss, heredity, or just plain aging. The arm lift procedure involves making incisions in the skin to remove excess fat and is performed while the patient is under anesthesia. The interior armpit area is usually where the incisions are carefully made so that any scarring will remain hidden after the procedure is completed.

But you may be wondering, “Is arm lift surgery suitable for me?”

Prior to making your decision on getting an arm lift done in Thailand, it is essential that you thoroughly weigh your expectations and potential risks through an in-depth discussion with your surgeon. Arm lifts are most suitable for individuals who are seeking to improve their appearance but not perfect it. While this procedure is indeed very effective at bringing about improvements in the way you look, it is important to note that there is a limit to how much change you can expect to see as results vary on a case-by-case basis.

That being said, arm lift surgery can be a great choice if you satisfy at least one of the below-mentioned requirements:

  • You have significant saggy or droopy skin in your upper arms
  • You are a non-smoker
  • You have a positive attitude and realistic expectations about the results you can achieve from this procedure

Goals of

Arm Lift Surgery

The main goal of arm lift surgery is to smooth and tighten loose skin on the arms by removing excess fat. This procedure can also be combined with liposuction or other contouring methods meant for other areas of the body to achieve a more toned overall look.

Pros and cons of

Arm Lift Surgery

Pros

  • Arm lift surgery is recommended as opposed to liposuction as it effectively restores youth to the arms by tightening saggy, droopy skin.
  • The procedure provides fast and extremely visible results, giving you sculpted arms which feel much lighter and firmer.
  • Fat that has accumulated around the arms due to a sedentary lifestyle, heredity, or futile diet attempts, can be eliminated with this procedure.
  • Arm lift surgery contributes to an overall toned appearance of the body, boosting one’s self-esteem.

Cons

  • Noticeable scarring will appear along your inner arm area, specifically in the region between your armpit and elbow. However, recent improvements to this procedure have made it possible to reduce the appearance of these scars.
  • If the patient does not frequently engage in physical activity and is often immobile, it can increase the risk of blood clots developing.
  • You may experience some swelling after the surgery — this is a common side effect that can be alleviated with supportive wraps.
  • This procedure also has a tendency to cause bruising or scarring in the treated areas, as well as other side effects — these can be avoided as long as you properly observe the preoperative and postoperative instructions provided by your doctor.

How it works:

Arm Lift Surgery

Arm lift surgery, or Brachioplasty, is typically composed of the following steps:

  1. Markings are made by your surgeon on your armpits, elbows, and arms. Where these incision lines will be placed, as well as their length and direction, is determined by the type of Brachioplasty that will be performed.
  2. Depending on what your surgeon recommends, you may be given general anesthesia or intravenous sedation to ensure you remain comfortable during the procedure.
  3. Incisions are then made, which will typically be placed within your armpit area or along your inner arms so that they will be fully hidden from view. In addition, liposuction may be performed for further removal of any excess fat.
  4. Once all the necessary incisions are made, your surgeon will perform the removal of excess skin and fat, after which your skin will be smoothed over your newly-contoured arms.
  5. The incisions are then carefully stitched close to ensure minimal scarring, giving you noticeably firmer and taut arms. The sutures may be placed underneath the skin for gradual absorption by your body.
  6. Drains may be required after surgery, and a sterilized dressing and compression garment will be wrapped around the treated area.

Preparation before

Arm Lift Surgery

Pre - treatment

In an initial consultation with your surgeon, you will be provided with comprehensive instructions on how to prepare before your surgery. These instructions will address certain areas such as:

  • Which medications you can continue to take and which ones you must discontinue
  • Whether you should avoid smoking for a certain period of time
  • When you should have your last meal prior to surgery
  • What items you must bring when you arrive for your scheduled appointment

It is essential for these instructions, as well as those that will be provided after surgery, to be meticulously followed in order to ensure you have a speedy recovery and that you remain in good health prior to and after treatment is completed.

The following gives you an insight as to the instructions you might expect from your surgeon:

  • You must discontinue the consumption of alcohol at least one week prior to your surgery. It is even more important that you do not consume any alcoholic beverages the day before your operation, and that you avoid eating or drinking no less than six hours pre-treatment.
  • If you are a smoker, it is essential that you discontinue smoking at least two weeks prior to your scheduled surgery. Similarly, you would have to wait for another two weeks post-surgery to resume smoking again. Smoking tends to aggravate potential risks and complications as smoke is composed of chemicals that act as free radicals which can hinder the all-important healing process. When this process is drawn out for too long, it can lead to the development of significantly unpleasant scars. Your surgeon will decide not to perform the surgery if it is found that you have not discontinued smoking.

Recovery after

Arm Lift Surgery

Post - treatment

  • A light compressive dressing will need to be worn for roughly two days post-treatment. It is important to keep wearing this as instructed by your surgeon to ensure complications such as hematoma and seroma (accumulation of inflammatory fluid) are prevented.
  • For the stitches, dissolvable sutures may be used which will be naturally absorbed by the body — this is convenient as there is no need to open them. Alternatively, your surgeon may opt to use ‘anchor’ sutures that will be placed every two to three inches — these will need to be opened approximately 10 days after getting stitched in.
  • It may take about four to six weeks post-surgery and aftercare to feel like your normal self again, with the scar needing approximately six months to fade away.
  • It is recommended that you do not engage in any heavy lifting for at least half a month to an entire month post-surgery.
  • You must also avoid driving for no less than half a month during your recovery phase.
  • Desk jobs must not be resumed until you’ve had at least a week of recovery as you will have sore and numb arms post-treatment, and significant amounts of movement could potentially cause the wounds to re-open.

Risks & side effects

Some of the risks include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Undesirable reaction to anesthesia
  • Delays in the healing process
  • Formation of keloids
  • Injury to the nerves

The presence of these risks may potentially require you to undergo revision surgery.

FAQs:

Arm Lift Surgery

Will I be conscious during the procedure?

The procedure will be done under general anesthesia, so you will be asleep throughout.

How long do I need to stay in Bangkok?

You will need to remain in the hospital for roughly three nights, after which you will have to return after 7 to 10 days for a follow-up appointment.

How long will it take to recover?

After surgery, you will notice that your arms are swollen and have become bruised, but these effects will gradually subside in about two to three weeks. The final phase in wound healing (the maturation phase) will carry on for the next 6 to 12 months.

Will I have scars?

There will be a straight scar stretched across the area between your armpit and your elbow, which is the main disadvantage of having Brachioplasty performed. However, in most cases, the scar tends to gradually become less visible with time and can only be noticed upon closer inspection. Individuals who have a history of keloids will need to consider the benefits of the procedure alongside the possibility of acquiring potentially large scars.

Is the result permanent?

Any considerable changes in weight will undo the results obtained through the surgery.

What are the realistic expectations from an arm lift?

While arm lift surgery does indeed help to improve the proportions of your arms against other areas of the body, it is important to note that certain side effects will be expected, and this must be taken into account before finally deciding to have the procedure performed.

A relatively long scar will exist between the area of your armpit and elbow, which can be made less noticeable with the help of incision taping devices. How visible and irregular the scar turns out to be will depend on your skin type and how well you care for the treated area, as well as how the surgery was performed; however, it may still be noticeable until at least five to eight weeks post-surgery.

You might also still notice some saggy skin in and around your underarm region if the intended treated area is not properly targeted, which will require an additional procedure to be performed in order to have the skin tightened.
