Forehead implants or augmentation is a cosmetic procedure through which the volume, shape, and size of the forehead are altered. This surgical procedure is carried out on those individuals who have an inborn uneven or flat forehead. The face is a person’s recognition and the forehead accounts for 1/3 of the face. While the majority of them are satisfied with their facial features, some are not, and hence they opt for forehead augmentation.
The implant gives permanent outcomes to those who are dissatisfied with their forehead contour. In this age, the best results are seen with 3D customized silicone implants and preform silicones. It gives a desired 3D effect to the forehead and also adds volume to it. Forehead augmentation materials
The procedures available to modify the contour of the forehead into a more feminine look are:
Bone cement: materials in this procedure are usually harmless and don’t cause irritation to the human body. Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is the most preferred material, as its stable, the results last forever and it can easily be shaped. The surgical procedure is roughly completed in 2 to 3 hours.
Silicone sheet: this type of material is not recommended as it’s not accessible and flexible in terms of shaping and adjusting. The procedure also leaves a significant scar and takes 3 to 6 months to fully recover from the numbness and abnormal sensations. However, the surgical time is the same as bone cement, i.e. 2 to 3 hours.
Fat injection: performed under local anesthesia. This procedure involves extracting fat tissues from the thighs or abdomen and injecting them into the forehead. Although the procedure is simple and gives desired effects, the only disadvantage is that within 1 or 2 years, the injected fat is most likely to be reabsorbed.
PMMA customized Implant: with a shorter duration of surgery, this procedure aims to get the desired outcome to modify the shape and contour of the forehead. These implants are prepared from polymethyl methacrylate; also known as PMMA. The advanced technology lets the surgeon create extraordinary cosmetic and anatomically fit corrections. The risk of asymmetry is also negligible, as it is customized according to each patient.
e-PTFE (Gore-Tex): Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) is a synthetic and porous material that let the tissue grow and connect post-surgery. It is placed as a vascular graft inside the human body; it triggers only a negligible immune response. It gets stable in its shape and position due to its features and it’s also reliable, flexible, easy to handle, and compliant.
Forehead Implant Procedure
The surgical cut is made 1-2 cm at the back of the hairline and a space is created to fit in the implant. After the augmentation, the incision is sutured and the surgeon will cover the region with a compression or pressure bandage. The procedure usually takes around 1 hour and is performed under general anesthesia.
Preparation before

Pre - treatment
- A thorough physical examination is conducted before the surgery, including family history, past medical history, and drug, and surgical history. Any underlying medical condition, infection, allergy, or immune-deficiency must be reported to the doctor prior to the procedure.
- Coagulants, immunosuppressants, and vitamin supplements (fish oil, Vitamin E, ginkgo extract, grape seed oil, etc) are discontinued at least 4 weeks before the procedure to avoid any risk.
- Alcohol, tobacco, and smoking must be stopped before and during the recovery phase as it may delay the healing process.
- Avoid wearing any accessories, makeup, hair oil, polish, or contact lens on the day of surgery. However, it is recommended to wash and dry the hair before surgery.
- A medical certificate and health examination are required for adult patients aged 45 years or older.
- Anxious patients must be counseled to not panic during or after the surgery. Patients take time to get used to the new and changed facial features.
- Post-surgery, wearing sunglasses is often recommended.
Recovery after

Post - treatment
- Most of the symptoms typically subside within one or two days.
- Post-surgical pain is managed by pain killers.
- Activities of daily living can be continued after 2 to 3 days as the patient might feel pain and pressure at the operation side. However, sometimes, the feeling of stiffness in the forehead may last for a few weeks.
- Edema, fluid accumulation, and scarring might appear on the forehead, below the eyes, or upper eyelids.
- A headband or compression bandage is wrapped around the head for approximately 3 days after the procedure.
- Avoid washing the surgical site and keep the stitches dry until fully healed.
- For swelling, cold compresses are recommended around the forehead and the eyes region for 20-24 hours. The swelling subsides gradually over a period of 2 to 4 weeks.
- High sleeping is recommended by the doctor in a semi-lying or semi-sitting position by using 2 or 3 pillows below the head.
- Sutures are usually removed around 1-2 weeks after surgery.
- The patient is recommended to restrain from strenuous physical activities and extreme workouts at least for 2 to 4 weeks as it may increase the risk of head injury. Also, it helps prevent blood clotting.
- No alcohol consumption and smoking until or unless the wound is healed completely.

When can I return to my daily activities?
A compression bandage is wrapped around the area of surgery to avoid fluid accumulation in the forehead for about 3 to 5 days. Activities of daily living can be continued after the bandage is removed. However, vigorous physical activities must be avoided for a month. Sometimes, where healing is delayed, immediately inform your physician.
Will I have any noticeable scars after implants?
Since the incisions are made from the opposite side of the hair parting, there is barely any damage to the skin and hair, hence no obvious scar forms.
