Buttocks augmentation is a procedure that surgically enhances the shape of the buttocks in order to improve firmness and overall proportion/balance, not only of the lower body but of the entire body as well. This can be done in many different ways, such as by adding more volume and definition to the shape and contour of the buttocks or by improving symmetrical balance.
Compared to breast implants, buttock implants are completely made from an elastomer, making them leakproof and much stronger yet soft at the same time. A single incision about two to three inches in length is discreetly made above the tailbone (or coccyx) in order to place an implant into each buttock. Implant placement can be either sub- or intra-muscular, or sub-fascial.
The goal of buttocks augmentation is to enhance the shape and volume of the buttocks to make them appear fuller and rounder.

Your surgeon will make an incision either at the buttock crease, or where the underside converges with the back of the thigh. The crease is where it is typically placed so that any scarring will remain sufficiently unnoticeable, however, this area is more prone to infection. After the incisions are made, appropriately sized pockets are created for the insertion of the implants, which may be placed below or over the gluteus maximus muscle.
Liposuction may be done in conjunction in order to provide more enhancement to the shape and contour of the buttocks. Once the implants are placed in both buttocks and the surgeon decides that the overall result looks symmetrical and fairly natural, the incisions will be stitched in with sutures.
It takes around two to three hours to complete this procedure — this depends on the technique used, the type of anesthesia administered, the placement of the implants, and the patient’s unique body type.
During an initial consultation with your surgeon, you will have a thorough discussion about your personal desired goals in terms of the results you would like to see with buttocks augmentation, as well as any concerns. For instance, the conversation may be centered around the degree to which you would like your buttocks to be enhanced in terms of shape and size. You will be able to choose from a wide range of shapes and sizes of implants and select the one that best suits your requirements, as well as your body type/build. All in all, your surgeon will talk to you about everything you need to know regarding the surgery, from incision types and the exact location where the implants will be placed to the different kinds of implants available and whether you would also like to consider a butt lift.
It is imperative that you ask and address every single question and concern you may have regarding the procedure. Being well aware of any alternatives, benefits, as well as any potential risks, is especially essential to help you reach a decision as to whether you would like to proceed with buttock implant surgery.
To ensure that your surgery goes smoothly and is without complications, it is advised that you:

As with all surgical procedures, a certain degree of risk is expected. Apart from implant displacement and leakage/breakage, other potential risks of buttock implant surgery include:
As a precautionary measure, injections to the buttocks area must be avoided in the future.
Am I a good candidate for this procedure?
The following criteria may make you a suitable candidate for buttock implant surgery:
How will the post-op period be for me?
You will need to consistently remain in a lying position for about three days post-surgery to avoid exerting any pressure on your buttocks. You will be given assistance on the fourth day to direct you into sitting on one side of the buttock at a time, before finally being able to sit normally on the seventh day.
How long will it take me to recover after the buttocks augmentation surgery?
It will take about two to three weeks for most of the swelling and soreness to disappear, with wound maturation taking place over the following 6 to 12 months.
Will I be conscious during the procedure?
The procedure will be performed under general anesthesia, so you will be asleep throughout.
How long will I need to wait before my final result?
The wait time varies on a case-by-case basis and often depends on the technique that was used to perform the surgery. It also depends on how easily you bruise. You will typically notice some swelling or bruising post-surgery, which will disappear over one to two weeks with visible results being noticed a few months later.
You may feel some discomfort right after the surgery and it is advised that you do not sit and instead rest on your stomach until enough time has passed for the sutures to heal. It may take you around a week to finally be able to sit normally again; however, it may feel like you’re sitting on some padding or a wallet. This sensation will be felt in the upper buttocks area as the placement of the implants is high up in the gluteal pocket, with the upper back of the thighs being where most of the sitting weight is spread across, making it impossible for you to directly sit on the implant.
You may also be expected to wear a compression/elastic wrap for around one to two weeks if you had liposculpture performed together with buttock implant surgery.
