Overview of

Buttocks Augmentation

in Thailand

Buttocks augmentation is a procedure that surgically enhances the shape of the buttocks in order to improve firmness and overall proportion/balance, not only of the lower body but of the entire body as well. This can be done in many different ways, such as by adding more volume and definition to the shape and contour of the buttocks or by improving symmetrical balance.

Compared to breast implants, buttock implants are completely made from an elastomer, making them leakproof and much stronger yet soft at the same time. A single incision about two to three inches in length is discreetly made above the tailbone (or coccyx) in order to place an implant into each buttock. Implant placement can be either sub- or intra-muscular, or sub-fascial.

Pros and cons of

Buttocks Augmentation

Pros

  • You may qualify for buttocks augmentation with implants if you aren’t a suitable candidate for augmentation via fat transfer due to the absence of excess fat tissue in your body. This is an advantage because implants produce even better, noticeable results in and around your gluteal area when compared to the fat transfer method.
  • The results you achieve with implants are permanent, unlike those obtained via fat transfer. This is because fat reabsorption may occur with the transfer method, which will negate your results. You won’t have to worry about this happening with implants since they are composed of semi-solid silicone, which means that they do not require any removal or replacement provided that no complications are experienced after surgery.
  • The implants are positioned in such a way that they do not come into contact with fat tissue, thus preventing absorption by the body while providing long-lasting, consistent results.

Cons

  • Buttocks enhancement with implants tends to be much costlier when compared to other augmentation procedures.
  • The implants may be identified by the body as foreign objects when placed in the buttocks, increasing the chances of rejection alongside other significant risks, complications, and side effects. These may be avoided with other augmentation methods.
  • Although the results from buttock implant surgery have proven to be long-lasting, they do not look very natural. The quality of the results obtained also depends on the expertise of the surgeon performing the procedure. You may have to opt for other augmentation methods if you are truly seeking exceptionally natural results.
  • Downtime for recovery can be quite long as it requires a good deal of rest, and you may need to wait about two to three weeks before returning to work. Complete and proper healing is of utmost importance as even the slightest negligence can give rise to significant health issues and consequences.
  • Since the implants need to be placed via incisions made over the tailbone, scarring is unavoidable when compared to the fat transfer method. These incisions are often quite large (but this depends on the size of the implants), so your scars may be noticeable even after you’ve gone through the complete healing phase.

How it works:

Buttocks Augmentation

Your surgeon will make an incision either at the buttock crease, or where the underside converges with the back of the thigh. The crease is where it is typically placed so that any scarring will remain sufficiently unnoticeable, however, this area is more prone to infection. After the incisions are made, appropriately sized pockets are created for the insertion of the implants, which may be placed below or over the gluteus maximus muscle.

Liposuction may be done in conjunction in order to provide more enhancement to the shape and contour of the buttocks. Once the implants are placed in both buttocks and the surgeon decides that the overall result looks symmetrical and fairly natural, the incisions will be stitched in with sutures.

It takes around two to three hours to complete this procedure — this depends on the technique used, the type of anesthesia administered, the placement of the implants, and the patient’s unique body type.

Preparation before

Buttocks Augmentation

Pre - treatment

During an initial consultation with your surgeon, you will have a thorough discussion about your personal desired goals in terms of the results you would like to see with buttocks augmentation, as well as any concerns. For instance, the conversation may be centered around the degree to which you would like your buttocks to be enhanced in terms of shape and size. You will be able to choose from a wide range of shapes and sizes of implants and select the one that best suits your requirements, as well as your body type/build. All in all, your surgeon will talk to you about everything you need to know regarding the surgery, from incision types and the exact location where the implants will be placed to the different kinds of implants available and whether you would also like to consider a butt lift.

It is imperative that you ask and address every single question and concern you may have regarding the procedure. Being well aware of any alternatives, benefits, as well as any potential risks, is especially essential to help you reach a decision as to whether you would like to proceed with buttock implant surgery.

To ensure that your surgery goes smoothly and is without complications, it is advised that you:

  • Quit smoking and drinking alcohol
  • Stop taking hormonal and herbal pills/supplements, as well as other medications (unless your doctor says otherwise) at least two weeks before surgery
  • Seek surgical clearance from a medical specialist if you have any known diseases

Recovery after

Buttocks Augmentation

Post - treatment

  • You will need to wear a compression garment to provide much-needed support to the surgical areas — this cannot be taken off for the next two to four days after surgery.
  • You will be expected to get ample rest and stay in bed for the next 24 hours post-surgery. Even after 24 hours have passed, it is essential that you get rest whenever possible, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, and ensure that you don’t miss any prescribed medications.
  • Although pain-relieving medications are typically given as a measure against discomfort, you will find that it will become much easier to walk, sit, and move around after roughly five to seven days.
  • Expect to see not a lot of swelling or bruising after the surgery, enabling you to notice visible results quite quickly after the procedure is completed.
  • Since the buttocks are a part of the body that is involved in movements such as walking and sitting, it is inevitable that you will feel pain that is quite intense during the healing/recovery phase which also takes longer when compared to alternative surgical procedures.
  • As the implant procedure involves some level of tissue stretching, it can be a painful experience especially if the implants are placed underneath the gluteus maximus muscle. Particularly excruciating pain will be experienced during the initial 48 hours following surgery, which will gradually ease with time and with pain-relieving medications if necessary. Nevertheless, many patients report extreme satisfaction with the results obtained from the procedure.
  • You may be able to slowly return to work within the next few days or weeks after surgery. However, you should still avoid engaging in any strenuous physical activities for a couple more weeks as advised by your doctor. Your regular exercise routine and physical activities can be resumed within the next one to two months as long as the pain has lessened significantly. However, it is important to note that the healing process varies on a case-by-case basis, depending on the technique used to perform the surgery, the type and placement of the implants, as well as the regular, day-to-day activities that you engage in.
  • The stitches will dissolve within the following 7 to 10 days. However, you may still notice some swelling which will gradually ease over the next several weeks, allowing your results to become more noticeable.

Risks & side effects

  • There is a chance that the implants may become displaced within the pockets, causing the buttocks to look asymmetrical. However, these implants are usually placed just above the area that is exposed to pressure when in a sitting position, thus reducing their risk of becoming displaced.
  • There are rare cases where implants could suddenly leak or break.

As with all surgical procedures, a certain degree of risk is expected. Apart from implant displacement and leakage/breakage, other potential risks of buttock implant surgery include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Substandard results
  • Undesirable reaction to anesthesia
  • Some delays in the healing process
  • Injury to the nerves
  • Tissue deformities around the implant
  • Unnecessary pressure on adjacent structures
  • Formation of keloids
  • The need for revision surgery

As a precautionary measure, injections to the buttocks area must be avoided in the future.

FAQs:

Buttocks Augmentation

Am I a good candidate for this procedure?

The following criteria may make you a suitable candidate for buttock implant surgery:

  • You would like more definition in the volume and shape of your buttocks than what is currently present.
  • You do not have sufficient fat tissue that can be removed to perform buttocks augmentation via the fat transfer method, otherwise known as the Brazilian Butt Lift.
  • You do have enough fat tissue that can be removed, but it is not adequate for the results you would like to achieve.

How will the post-op period be for me?

You will need to consistently remain in a lying position for about three days post-surgery to avoid exerting any pressure on your buttocks. You will be given assistance on the fourth day to direct you into sitting on one side of the buttock at a time, before finally being able to sit normally on the seventh day.

How long will it take me to recover after the buttocks augmentation surgery?

It will take about two to three weeks for most of the swelling and soreness to disappear, with wound maturation taking place over the following 6 to 12 months.

Will I be conscious during the procedure?

The procedure will be performed under general anesthesia, so you will be asleep throughout.

How long will I need to wait before my final result?

The wait time varies on a case-by-case basis and often depends on the technique that was used to perform the surgery. It also depends on how easily you bruise. You will typically notice some swelling or bruising post-surgery, which will disappear over one to two weeks with visible results being noticed a few months later.

You may feel some discomfort right after the surgery and it is advised that you do not sit and instead rest on your stomach until enough time has passed for the sutures to heal. It may take you around a week to finally be able to sit normally again; however, it may feel like you’re sitting on some padding or a wallet. This sensation will be felt in the upper buttocks area as the placement of the implants is high up in the gluteal pocket, with the upper back of the thighs being where most of the sitting weight is spread across, making it impossible for you to directly sit on the implant.

You may also be expected to wear a compression/elastic wrap for around one to two weeks if you had liposculpture performed together with buttock implant surgery.
